27 mars 1977. À 14 heures, un épais brouillard envahit l’habituellement calme aéroport de Los Rodeos, à Tenerife, dans les îles Canaries. Sur la piste, deux énormes avions de ligne, chargés de passagers, sont immobilisés sous cette chape de brume. Une explosion survenue dans un aéroport voisin a détourné le trafic vers l’aérodrome sous-doté de Tenerife. Trois heures plus tard, 583 personnes seront mortes.
Pour expliquer comment une telle tragédie a pu se produire, Crash of the Century reconstitue les instants qui ont mené à ce désastre.
